Bathrooms Are Job One

Last week the Chicago Cubs and Wrigley Field were sold by the Tribune Company to the Ricketts family for $845 million.  What does that have to do with an urban development blog?

New owner, Tom Ricketts had the quote of the week when he told Crain's Chicago Business that his number one priority for the historic stadium is renovating the bathrooms.  He put it,  “As a fan or owner, you’re just not proud of that part of the experience.”

Slice of Life: The Outdoor Store

The majority of people who read this blog are in the colder portions of the northern hemisphere.  That's why this picture may be surprising to them.  It turns out that in warmer cities, sometimes food stores are outside.  And not just fresh fruit shops -- entire convenience stores are often set up on sidewalks, like this  one in Singapore.  At least this one's in a tent.  I've seen full retail stores set up with nothing overhead at all.  And not fly-by-night mom-and-pop operations.  Real, branded chain stores like the 7-Eleven above.  It make sense when you think about it.  When you're just a few degrees off the equator it makes more sense to only refrigerate what needs to be refrigerated, and leave the rest exposed.

Building Spotlight: Four Times Square

The Conde Nast Building (4 Times Square, New York, New York) is more than just a shiny new skyscraper in midtown Manhattan.  It is an important communications platform for the entire region.  When the twin towers of the World Trade Center were destroyed on September 11, 2001 the main transmission facility for the New York region's television and radio stations was destroyed.  While some broadcasters had backup facilities on the nearby Empire State Building (350 Fifth Avenue, New York, New York), those signals were often weaker than the primary transmissions.

Enter, The Conde Nast Building, also known as Four Times Square.

The building has since been outfitted with both primary and backup transmitters for some of the area's broadcasters since space on the Empire State Building was very dear.  Plans to erect a master antenna across the river in New Jersey are on-again off-again, and many don't think they will ever come together.  Until then, Four Times Square and the Empire State Building will be the source of most broadcasts in the New York - New Jersey - Connecticut Tri-State Area.

More New York City buildings.

John Wesley Powell Federal Building, Reston, Virginia

Skidmore, Owings and Merrill has added a new building to its web site:

The John Wesley Powell Federal building in Reston, Virginia was completed in 1974 for the U.S.G.S.

Leamouth Peninsula Building N

Skidmore, Owings and Merrill has added a new building to its web site:

Leamouth Peninsula Building N is a three-story office building in London built in 2008 with a vertical garden.

Building Spotlight: One PPG Place

One of the great triumphs of this industrial city on the edge of America's heartland is the One PPG Place building (1 PPG Place, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania).  It looks like a glass castle rising into the sky.  Appropriately enough, it was built for the Pittsburgh Plate Glass company.  It would be a real shame if a glass company built anything other than a spectacular crystalline structure.

SOM's Latest Looks Familiar

Skidmore, Owings & Merrill has posted a new project on its web site.

SOM's latest is the China World Trade Center in Beijing.  It's a nice building, but looks disturbingly similar to another "World Trade Center" that's still in our memories.

More about the building here: http://www.som.com/content.cfm/china_world_trade_center
